It’s a cool concept. If I won the Kindle though, I’m not sure how comfortable I’d be using it in the kitchen while trying out recipes from this book. :)

Summer Portraits

I have been working with a number of different individuals, family groups, and businesses to kick off Summer shoots.  It is already the middle of June and there are only a few slots remaining for on-location photo sessions.  If you are thinking about portrait or commercial photography, please get with me ASAP so we can get you on the calendar.  I look forward to spending time with you and having the opportunity to meet your family or professional needs.

Summer months provide fantastic opportunities to get outside and create imagery that is one of a kind!  I have some really fun concepts in mind for on-location shooting.

This image was captured during a large family reunion.  Children are always more interested in playing than picture taking.  The best practice is to try and get large group shots done in the beginning leaving ample time to have the kids go play after.  This is where all the magic happens.  The best portraits are often the ones that go unnoticed.  Sneaking off I light up my sensor with candid moments.

To the families of Ence, Swope & Meiners, thank you for the wonderful opportunity to capture your family spirit!  I appreciate your business and look forward to working with all of you again in the near future.  Highlights of our day will come shortly.

Look Into The Light

I use light modifiers frequently.  Umbrellas, grids, soft-boxes, light strips, ring flash, diffusers, etc.  They all have their place and do something a little different.  I am definitely a soft target for camera accessories.  Do not be fooled by the flashy gadgets, none of them are the end-all-be-all to changing your photographic life.

My good friend and fellow “tog” James offered some great advice a few months ago.  He mentioned that it is a best practice to spend extensive time with one light modifier before moving on to the next.  The need for field testing in all situations is crucial to having a complete understanding of what a piece of equipment can do and how to best use it.  Most of my light work has been done using a 60′ shoot through umbrella and grids.

There is so much that goes into lighting.  Understanding it and how to use it takes time.  The variables, including the angle of the shot, distance to subject, ambient light, subject color, are all huge factors in which type of lighting and modifiers I use.  They are all different under normal shooting conditions.

The best advice for those looking at light mods is to not buy all of them!  Pick one or two that work in terms of size, portability, budget and the equipment you already have.  Stick with them long enough to completely understand how to properly use them and your images will stand a part from the rest.

The picture below was taken using a modified light strip.  I told my little man to “Look into the light”.  Shot at 1/250th, f/8, 35mm, light strip above diffused on half power.  Post done in CS5.

Cover – Summer 2011

Most of you know by now that I keep my wedding & portrait photography seperate from the fly fishing work that I do.  Once in a while I will post announcements here to let you know of my other happenings and accomplishments.

For those interested, be on the look out for the latest issue of flyfishing magazine “Fly Fusion” www.flyfusionmag.com .  The Summer 2011 cover features my work of fly anglers Layne Reed and World Cast Flyfishing Guide Casey Birkholz.

If you are in the Utah area, a copy can be located at most Target Stores, Barnes & Noble or any fly shop.  The trip was taken this past fall.  We floated some beautiful waters and amazing trout were caught.
